According Merrian-Webster dictionary, to be under a spell is to be "affected by magic". The individual or group under a spell are influenced by a power that controls or dominate them. Vocabulary.com puts it this way, "If you're under a spell, then what you do is out of your control — your thoughts and actions are dictated by the spell. Spell can refer to the magic words you say, or it can describe being under the influence of those words."
We see an example of this in the book of Acts 8, where Simon the Socerer put the people of Samaria under his spell. In Acts 8:11 "They had been under his spell for some time, since they were amazed at the magic he could perform." NTE version.
There are people like Simon, the socerer, who use witchcraft or magical powers to control the thoughts and actions of their victims. Sometimes the victims don't realize that their actions is not their own. They may hear a voice telling them to do something, but they think it's their own thoughts.
Here are some examples of when an individual or group is under a spell:
1. Making costly mistakes. This is when a victim will do something very costly that they will not normally do. It's usually after the deed is done, that they come back to their senses. They are usually shocked to find out what they have done. For instance, someone who is not violent at all stabs a family member or even themself. Everyone around them is also shocked because they know the person is not violent at all.
2. Falling in Love with someone out of your will.
3. Giving someone your money or anything that they ask you out of your will
4. Quiting a relationship or marriage for no explainable reason.
5. Walking away from a job for senseless reason
